The Tibet House is an excellent resource centre located in the Lodhi Road Institutional Area of New Delhi and offers a real glimpse of the Tibetan history. The Tibet House Museum has a collection of Tibetan artifacts that were originaly brought to India by Dalai Lama from Tibet.

The most valued possessions of Tibet House Museum include the rare 15th century Thankas’, or the painted scrolls, which depicts the life story of Buddha. Other attractions of the museum are, beautiful Buddha figurines, old currency notes, costumes, prayer objects, musical instruments, antique jewelry, ancient weapons and so on.

In addition to the 200 precious Thanka paintings, the Tibet House Museum also has over 140 statues in copper, gilded bronze, sandalwood, and stone, which symbolizes the religious heritage of Tibet. Most of the artifacts stored in the Tibet House are bought to India by Tibetan refugees and donated to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

The Tibet House Museum also give a glimpse of Tibetan history and culture in its books that are stored in the library of Tibet House. The shops at the Tibet House complex sell Tibetan handicrafts, clothes, jewelry and curios, which the visitor can shop for. Moreover, if interested, visitors can also join the informative lectures and discussions that are conducted at regular basis.

The Tibet House Museum, thereby, performs the significant role of preserving the ancient heritage of Tibet and also connects people in general, especially the Tibetan children and youths with its history. The Tibet House also organizes many exhibitions, conferences, filmshows and festivals at regular intervals. Most of these programs showcases the philosophy, literature, art and culture of Tibet and its people.

The Tibet House was originated in the year 1965 by His Holiness the Dalai Lama with the aim to preserve and spread the cultural heritage of Tibet and to provide a centre for Tibetan and Buddhist studies. The Tibet House in Delhi also publishes a biannual bulletin called the ‘Tibet House Bulletin’, which reaches all over the world.

Tourists who want to visit Tibet House can either take local buses from various points within the Delhi Capital to reach the Tibet Museum or can hire auto-rickshaws and taxis. The nearest railway station from the museum is the New Delhi Railway Station and the nearest metro station is the Pragati Maidan metro station. The Indira Gandhi International Airport serves as the nearest International Airport to the Tibet House. It takes approximately 30 minutes time to see the Tibet Museum. The museum opens from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm from Monday to Friday.

Tibet house is a common attraction in the list of places to visit in Delhi. Foreign tourists from different parts of the world throng to visit this museum along with large number of domestic tourists. It is one such place where you can learn various fascinating facts about the life and teachings of Buddha.
