Delhi is undergoing a significant infrastructural revamp, with a focus on developing a network of expressways that will redefine connectivity and reshape the city’s landscape. These expressway projects aim to address traffic congestion, facilitate economic growth, and enhance the overall livability of the capital.
Let’s take a closer look at Delhi’s 5 key expressway projects that are expected to have a profound impact on the city by 2024:
Delhi Dehradun Expressway
This under construction economic corridor will connect Delhi to the beautiful hill station of Dehradun. The 210-km expressway will significantly reduce travel time between the two cities.
The length of Delhi-Dehradun Expressway/ Delhi Saharanpur Highway in the capital is around 14 Km. This Expressway, from Delhi Meerut Expressway near Akshardham to Karawal Nagar at Delhi/UP Border, includes a 6 KM elevated stretch through North East Delhi’s congestion.
Expected to be operational in July, 2024 in Delhi, this expressway will help reduce traffic movement in parts of North East Delhi namely Geeta colony, Shastri Park, Khajuri Khas.
Delhi-Mumbai Expressway
Connecting Delhi with the main alignment of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the DND KMP Spur will connect the DND flyover in Maharani Bagh to the KMP expressway in Haryana. The Delhi part of the DND-KMP Spur is approximately 9 kilometers long. The elevated Delhi part will cross the Delhi Metro at multiple locations and end near the Agra Canal. The project is already in progress and is expected to be fully operational in December 2024.
Importantly, the 1,386 km Delhi Mumbai Expressway will be India’s longest expressway. It will reduce the travel distance between the two metro cities by 12 percent and travel time by 50 percent (from 24 hours to 12 hours).
Dwarka Expressway
This 29-km expressway will connect Dwarka in Delhi to the Gurgaon Expressway and Decongest old Delhi Jaipur Highway. Out of 29 km, 18.9 km of Haryana is already operational, and the remaining 10.1 km of Delhi part is expected to be operational by early 2024.
Barapullah Flyover (Phase 3)
The flyover will provide easy connectivity between AIIMS and Noida and to other parts of North East Delhi. Phase 3 of the Barapullah flyover between Sarai Kale Khan and Mayur Vihar is 3.5 Km long and expected to be completed in December 2024.
After completion, these roads will boost traffic connectivity within Delhi NCR. Many other projects, such as the Dilshad Garden Anand Vihar elevated flyover and the Nand Nagri Flyover, are also in progress.
UERII Urban Extension Road
The 27-km-long under-construction UERII (Urban Extension II) project will run from near IGI Airport to Alipur on the Delhi Panipat Expressway. The project will ease traffic movement from South Delhi to Panipat and Chandigarh and form a semi-ring road on Delhi’s Western Border.
Expected to be completed in 2024, the project will also have two spur roads.
