Historical facts about Safdarjung Tomb
The Tomb of Safdarjung in Delhi is the resting place of Safdarjung, Nawab of Oudh (Awadh). It was built in 1754 and was based on Mughal architecture. Safdarjung was a viceroy of Muhammad Shah Sayyid and ruled over Awadh independently. Later on, after the death of Muhammad Shah, he was made the Prime Minister by Muhammad Shah Ahmad Shah, his successor to the throne. Soon, he usurped all power and became so powerful that the Emperor had to call Marathas to drive him out of Delhi. He died in 1753 and his son, Shuuja ud Daula, built this tomb for him after getting the permission of Emperor.
Key Features of the Tomb
- Char Bagh Plan with Mausoleum at Center- Tomb is surrounded by square garden on all sides with each side being about 280 meters long.
- Ninefold Floor Plan
- Five-part Façade
- Large Podium with hidden stairway- the podium measures 50 meters on each side.
The main entrance to the tomb is ornamented and decorated. It has a purple façade. The main mausoleum is made of Red and buff stones. The central chamber is square in shape and it has eight partitions. Interior of tomb is covered with rococo plaster. There are four pillar at the four corners outside the tomb. The walls of the tomb are high and made of rubble stone masonry.
There are three pavilions in the complex located in the western, northern and southern parts and named as “Jangli Mahal”, “Moti Mahal” and “Badshah Pasand” respectively.
