Traveller’s Pick – About Lodi Tomb
Delhi has a history of being ruled by different dynasties in the medieval period. Just to summarise, these were the Mamluks (1206-90), Khalijis (1290-1320), Tughlaqs (1320-1414), Sayyids (1414-1451) and the Lodis (1451-1526) in that order that ruled Delhi. Together this period is known as the period of Delhi Sultanate.
The last among these were the Lodis, whose dynasty was established by Bahlul Lodhi, followed by Sikandar Lodi and then Ibrahim Lodhi.
In Delhi, the tombs of two of these Lodi rulers exist. One of Bahlul Lodi at Chirag Delhi and the other of Sikandar Lodi in the famous Lodi Gardens. It is interesting to note that Lodi Gardens also have tomb of Muhammad Shah IV of Sayyid dynasty. This piece of writing is for the tomb of Sikandar Lodhi.

Reasons for visiting the tomb
This tomb is an architectural wonder as is based on fusion of Indo-Islamic architecture. This octagonal tomb drew its inspiration from the Tomb of Muhammad Shah Sayyid of the Sayyid dynasty, which is also situated in the Lodi Gardens. It was the first tomb to have been laid out in a fortified garden complex in Indian subcontinent. The chamber of the Tomb is surrounded by verandah and has carved pillars with classic arches.

The tomb is built is such a way that it can give the visitors a false notion of being two storied structure due to the impeccable craftsmanship. Apart from that, the presence of very famous Lodi Shish and the Bara Gumbad is another reason for visiting it. Location and Metro Connectivity
Sikandar Lodhi’s Tomb is in Lodi Gardens which lie on northern flanks of Lodi Road, just opposite the Lodi Road Post Office.
Jor Bagh Metro Station of Yellow Line of Delhi Metro lies closest to it. The other line which reaches up to Jawarhar Lal Nehru Stadium Station is the Violet Line.
