60 year old Sunday Book Market of Daryaganj has now been shifted to a new address which is Mahila Haat ground opposite Broadway Hotel in Chandni Chowk. Earlier its old address used to be on stretch of Asif Ali Road to Netaji Subhash Market in Daryaganj. Due to High Court’s order, Book Market in Daryaganj was closed for a long time and Book lovers were finding it very difficult to find their Books.
Famous Indian author Khuswant Singh used to visit this Market and had also described it in one his article, he wrote, I got many a Books here in the Market which could not be found elsewhere in the whole world. He frequently used to visit this Market and had an emotional attachment with the vendors.
There are total 275 vendors in this market, each has been allotted a space to 6×4 feet for their book stall. There is no place in India other than this Book Market where cheap books can be found, shopkeepers have also named this Market with a tagline as “Books for All“. People searching for novels, competitive exams books, magazines can be found very easily at much lower rates than its regular price as these normally are second hand stuff. Sunday Market is an amazing place for all readers. This place gives you real thrill when you see Books being sold @ per Kg rate. Here are some of the old photographs of the this Market when it used to be in Daryaganj.
Currently very few Vendors have shifted here at the new address, that too with limited number of books but may be as the time pasts, we might see this market running full fledged. Daryaganj Sunday Book Bazar had history of its own, book lovers have been visiting this place in search of books they need. Due to Traffic impediment, the High Court of Delhi had ordered for its closure in August 2019. Visitors to the new market (Mahila Haat) can now also enjoy the delicacies of Chandni Chowk too for which it is famous.
