Much to the relief of LMV owners who have not yet applied for their Fastag, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has extended the deadline for mandatory Fastage implementation till December 15, 2019.
With the introduction of the Fastag, the government seeks to reduce the waiting time for vehicles at toll gates by ensuring speedy movement, thereby saving productive man-hours and reducing carbon emissions from vehicles. At the same time, it will help in better management of toll revenue as online payment methods will replace cash payments to a good extent. Though this is not bad in intent, the practical aspects of it will be known from December 16 when it comes into operation.
So, what will happen if you do not have a fastag after December 15?
1) You shall not enter the Fastag lane on a toll because if you do enter it, then double toll amount will have to be paid.
2) Fastag is free of cost till December 15. The only money you have to pay is a refundable security and the minimum balance. There is no cost of the tag till December 15. If you have missed this deadline, then you will have to buy it at a price after this date.
3) With government expected to gradually increase the number of Fastag lanes on its tolls, you will have to be in longer queues in non-fastag lanes.
