If there is a shopping destination in Delhi where elite love to shop, it is the market of South Extension, a place in South-East District of Delhi. Divided into two parts by the inner ring road passing through these, these are most famously called as South Ex Part I and South Ex Part II. Part I lies to the north of ring road whereas Part II lies to its south. The area has become a top shopping destination for Delhiites with big shops lined up on either side of the ring road.
It is a shopping destination where premier brands of products, be it apparel or accessories, consumer electronics or even the book shops and educational institutions are situated. The property prices and rentals of this area are one of the highest in Delhi with overall cost of living being one of the most expensive.
South Extension I
South Extension Part I is situated with Defence Colony to its east, Kidwai Nagar to west, ring road forming the southern flank and Sewa Nagar to north. Wills Lifestyle, Kasaya are some of the best known clothing shops. PC Jewellers, Tanishq, Malabar Gold and Diamonds are some of the jewelry shops situated in the area. Om Book Shop in well known for selling wide range of books. Some of the most expensive books which are not to be found anywhere else can be found here. Arena and MAAC are prominent centres teaching animations here. Bengali Sweets is an long standing sweets shop and restaurant. Small shops selling toys, shoes, accessories etc can also be found here.
One historical monument of importance in this area is Bada Gumbaz, which is the tomb of Mubarak Shah Sayiid. It lies in the neighbourhood of Kotla Mubarakpur.
South Extension II
On the southern flank of Ring Road lies South Extension II market. This is another hub of top shopping brands. Pepperfry furniture also has its studio here where one of the trendiest furniture can be found. Nalli Silk Sarees, SABOOS, Westside, Pantaloons and Manayavar are prominent apparel brands here. Kalyan Jewellers, Croma, Cox and Kings, McDonald’s are some of the other famous names having their retail outlets here. Many education institutes and coaching centers are also present here.
Both of these markets are interspersed with residential block a few meters interior from the Ring Road, though Ring Road side has retail outlets only.
The South Extension Metro Station of Delhi Metro Pink Line connects both these markets.
AIIMS is the nearest and most prominent hospital in close proximity to South Ex Market.
