South East Delhi District

A cursory look at the map of South-East district of Delhi is good enough to know that this is a hub of industrial and commercial activity, besides having residential areas. The district is bordered in west by South Delhi district, in south by the Faridabad district of Haryana, in east by River Yamuna and beyond it the district of Uttar Pradesh, and by New Delhi district and East Delhi districts in north-west and north-east respectively.

This district was carved out along with Shahdara District, which took the total number of Delhi revenue areas to 11. It comes under the ambit of Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The sub-divisions of this district are Defence Colony, Kalkaji and Sarita Vihar.

Area and Population

The South-East district stretches from Jor Bagh, Lodhi road, Khan Market and Sunder Nagar, through Lajpat Nagar, New Friends Colony, Defence colony, Nehru Place, Jamia Nagar, Kalkaji, Govindpuri, Okhla Phase- II, to Greater Kailash Part II, Alaknanda, Sarita Vihar and Badarpur.

Since the district was created after the Census of India was completed in 2011, there are no independent statistics for this district.

Okhla, Govindpuri, Kalkaji, Tughlaqabad and their adjoining areas are industrial areas as many small, medium and large scale industries are located here. Tuglaqabad is also an inland container depot which facilitates movement of goods from Delhi to coastal port areas via rail network. These areas also provide residence for labor which comes to work from different parts of the country.

The residential areas of Greater Kailash, East of Kailash and New Friends Colony are considered to be posh and have high market rates of properties.

Metro Connectivity

Violet line and Magenta lines of Delhi Metro pass through this district in in North-South and East-West directions respectively. These facilitate movement of people in different parts of city.

Highways

NH 19 passes right through this district in north-south orientation.

Railway Stations

Tughlaqabad, Okhla, Lajpat Nagar, Nizamuddin and Lodi Colony railway stations are located in South-West district.

Urban Amenities

A number of urban amenities are available for the residents of this district. Good connectivity by various means of transport, park spaces, schools and colleges, banking and financial centers, avenues for entertainment like cinemas, clinics and multi-specialty hospitals like Apollo, bars, restaurants and hotels including the 5 star properties make this region a buzzing urban zone.

Okhla Bird Sanctuary, Wonders of the World, Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary and Tughlaqabad Fort are two important destinations for spending time leisurely.

Commercial Centers

Lajpat Nagar, Greater Kailash, New Friends Colony and Defence colony are major shopping centers of this district. These are popular not only among the residents of this district but also for people all around Delhi and beyond. There are both the traditional style markets and shopping malls present providing multiple shopping choices to the people.

Besides, each locality has its own small market from where the items of day-today use can be bought.
