Nai Sarak is basically the road between Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazar but is well known for Books and Stationary shops in Old Delhi area. Nai Sarak is wholesale and retail market area for text books. It has numerous shops on the main road itself and many of the shops are even on first and second floor of the buildings other than ground floor and many others shops are even on small streets too adjoining this road.
Books ranging from Class 1 to 12, school, colleges, entrance exams, graduation, post graduation, engineering and medical are available here, be it NCERT, JPH, Sultan Chand etc. Many shops here are specialised selling papers and other stationary items mostly used in offices. Also, some of the major publication house had main offices or showrooms here. It became a book shop hub when publishers and booksellers from Pakistan moved to Delhi after the partition of India. Most shopkeepers started doing business in here Nai Sarak by buying and selling old books.
In addition to this whole market there are also few wholesale shops of pure cotton, silk and stickers selling pure silk among the many available varieties. Some of the famous Saree shops here are Arun Vastra Bhandar, Nandlal Sarees etc. There are also one or two shops selling old and new musical instruments on the market. This area is surrounded by various famous eatery shops, so one’s visit can be combined with enjoying delicacies of here too.
In past decades, several publishers have moved to Daryaganj as the largest publishing center for India. Since then, stores have slowly shut down in Nai Sarak due to decreasing business. Also, some shops were shut down because online shopping is becoming more popular, also photocopying of books, digital ebooks has also been increasing.
Nai Sarak can be reached by taking a left turn after the Gali Paranthewali and just before the Katra Nawab Gali from the main Chandni Chowk Road.
Nearest Metro Station is Chandni Chowk or Chawri Bazar.
