Tulsi Vivah is a significant Hindu ceremony that commemorates the union of the sacred Tulsi plant and Lord Shaligram. Tulsi Vivah 2023: Significance
Tulsi Vivah carries immense religious significance among Hindus, who celebrate it with fervor and zeal due to its profound importance. Devotees of Lord Vishnu decorate temples with lights and flowers, conducting Bhajan kirtans to symbolize the sacred union of Goddess Tulsi and Lord Shaligram. This grand celebration is particularly significant for those facing challenges in their marriages, as performing Tulsi Vivah is believed to bring blessings for an ideal life partner. Additionally, childless couples undertaking Tulsi Vivah with a trained priest are believed to receive the blessing of parenthood, while those without female children perform kanyadaan, considering Goddess Tulsi as their daughter.
Tulsi Vivah 2023: Story
According to Hindu scriptures, a demon created from Lord Shiva’s wrath posed a threat to the gods. To counter this, the demon, named Jalandhar, was advised by his Guru Shukracharya to marry Vrinda, a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu. Due to Vrinda’s unwavering devotion and character, no one could defeat Jalandhar. To end this, Lord Vishnu took the form of Jalandhar and sat with Vrinda during her puja ritual, ultimately breaking her character. Vrinda, realizing the truth, cursed Lord Vishnu, turning him into the Shaligram stone. Later, she granted Laxmi’s request to lift the curse, but she also sacrificed her own life. In return, Lord Vishnu blessed her to become a Tulsi, marrying her in the form of Shaligram. Since then, Hindus worldwide celebrate Tulsi Vivah along with Shaligram.
Tulsi Vivah 2023: Puja Customs
1. Devotees wake up early and prepare for the marriage ceremony of Lord Shaligram and Tulsi, adorning the puja room with flowers and placing Shaligram and Goddess Tulsi together.
2. Various bhog prasad items are prepared.
3. Ceremonies are fervently conducted in numerous temples.
4. Fasting is observed until the evening.
5. Colorful rangoli is created.
6. The Tulsi plant is intricately decorated, resembling an Indian bride, with vibrant sarees or dupattas and other accessories.
7. Shaligram is bathed with Gangajal and panchamrit.
8. Lord Shaligram and Goddess Tulsi are adorned with flowers or garlands, and a diya with desi ghee is lit.
9. Yellow cloth is used to embellish Shaligram Ji.
10. Gathbandhan is performed with a sacred red and yellow thread.
11. Kirtan and bhajans are organized.
12. Various sattvik bhog prasad is offered.
13. The puja ceremony is conducted by a trained priest.
14. Priests perform marriage ceremonies and recite Vedic mantras.
15. Goddess Tulsi Aarti and Lord Vishnu Aarti are chanted.
16. After completing the rituals, the bhog prasad is distributed among all family members.
