22 February 2023, Indian politician Shelly Oberoi took office as mayor of Delhi’s municipal government. After the merger of North Delhi, South Delhi, and East Delhi into a single Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Oberoi was elected as the city’s first mayor.

Early Life and Career

Originally from India, Shelly Oberoi entered the world in the year 1983. She holds a Ph.D. in management from the Indira Gandhi National Open University, a Master of Business Administration from Himachal Pradesh University, a Bachelor of Commerce from Janki Devi Memorial College, and a Bachelor of Business Administration in management from Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode. In Delhi University, she worked as a visiting assistant professor.

Political Career

Oberoi first started involved with the Aam Aadmi Party, Delhi in 2013, and by 2021, she was serving as the party’s Vice President of the Women’s Wing. In 2022, she was elected as the councilwoman for Ward 86 in Delhi, which is part of the Patel Nagar Assembly seat. As of the 23rd of December, 2023, she was a candidate for mayor. On February 22nd, 2023, she defeated the BJP’s Rekha Gupta candidature for mayor of Delhi by a slim margin of 34 votes, making her the city’s first female mayor.
