G20 New Delhi Summit 2023

In 2023, Pragati Maidan in New Delhi will play host to the Group of Twenty (G20) summit, the 18th meeting. The summit will take place under India’s presidency, which began on 1 December 2022 and will end in the fourth quarter of 2023. At the conclusion of the Bali summit, Indonesian President Joko Widodo handed over the G20 Presidency gavel to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a small, private ceremony.

Delhi will host India’s G-20 presidency period (including the G-20 foreign ministers’ meeting in March next year and the gathering of the G-20 heads of state in September). Manish Sisodia, the deputy chief minister of Delhi, presided over the meeting, which also included other ministers, the heads of agencies responsible for maintaining the city’s roads, representatives from cities in the region, and members of the Delhi Police.

Improving infrastructure, enhancing cleanliness and beautification, exhibiting Indian culture, increasing public participation, and documenting the summit were named as the five major areas by a senior official from the LG office. Improvements to roads, pedestrian access, signs, and the area under flyovers are all part of “the infrastructure section. The official stated that authorities responsible for maintaining roads have been directed to improve pedestrian walkways and centre verges and to guarantee that potable water is readily available in public areas. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Public Works Department, and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department have all been ordered to put in place permanent measures to prevent water logging during the monsoon when six of the eight incidents will take place.

Sanitation goals, according to a second LG office official, include the installation of dustbins throughout the city, the cleaning of central and side verges of all PWD and MCD roads, and a concerted effort to speed up the flattening of all existing landfill sites in order to complete works on the Okhla landfill site before the events began. Also, beautification of markets and public locations and the installation of public sculptures across the city would be ensured.

To help promote Indian culture abroad, the Indian government has tasked the tourist ministry and city governments with beautifying landmarks like the Qutub Minar, Lodhi Garden, Red Fort, Purana Qila, Humayun’s Tomb, and Sunder Nursery with new landscaping and lighting. In addition, well-known markets like Connaught Place, Chandni Chowk, Khan Market, and Dilli Haat will be given a facelift. The government would arrange for G-20 delegates and tourists to visit famous marketplaces and community dinners at venues like Bangla Sahib and the ISKCON Temple.
