December 27, 2008
New Delhi: For all those who won the right to own a DDA flat from among the 5,020 up for grabs through lottery, it will be mid-January before they get their demand letters for payments which will allow them to take possession of their homes. For the 5.60 lakh plus applicants who were not lucky to win, DDA has set a deadline of December 31 for refund of registration fees.
With the sale of the flats, DDA stands to earn about Rs 750 crore. A week after the draw, DDA’s housing department is now busy scrutinising the demand letters to be sent to the winners. “We will start sending out the demand letters from January 15,” DDA commissioner (housing) Asma Manzar said.
She added that the after the demand letters are delivered, the owners will have to pay the amount for the flat within 180 days. On the status of all those who failed to qualify, Manzar said the refund process was already on and people had started receiving the cheques.
“We have told the banks that they should wind up the refunding process by December 31. Those who don’t receive the refund after that should contact DDA,” Manzar added.
According to DDA officials, about 60% of the flats are new constructions and the rest include flats that were either allotted to the government and have now been vacated or the ones which have been surrendered owning to non-payment by the allottee.
Approximately 286 flats are expandable and their owners would be allowed to construct up to two storeys.
Meanwhile, DDA has no plans to open another housing scheme till 2010. At the moment around 16,000 odd flats are under construction, DDA officials added.
