Trade Fair 2008 gets underway - Don't miss the foreign stalls
November 14, 2008

New Delhi: THE KABULIWALLA is back at the India International Trade Fair being held at Pragati Maidan. And so are others selling stuff that promise to turn you into a shop-o-holic. Here is the list of must-visit stlls.

AFGHANISTAN for dry fruits — almonds
Go walnuts, pistachios — priced anywhere between Rs 200 per kg and Rs 900 per kg.

Fresh organic fruits, including Kandhari pomegranate, honeydew melon and grapes are for sale at reasonable prices. But if you are looking to try something distinct, ask for seedless pomegranates.

Also, check out handwoven carpets. “They are 100 per cent natural, we use organic colours derived from fruits, vegetables and roots of trees,” said Mohammed Seddiq of Nomad Rugs. “These carpets last up to 100 years,” he added.

PAKISTAN is the partner country in the fair.

Unique items include lappa sarees from Bahawalpur, and Katchi sarees, as well as Kashmiri shawls.

Then there are objects made of onyx stone. But those expecting pure green onyx are in for a disappointment. Many stone objects have brown and white lines treading in between.

Also, catch hold of popular curries like Peshawari karahi, before they run out.

SOUTH AFRICA

The South African section includes a lot of ethnic goods unavailable elsewhere.

Woodwork includes weapons and jewellery. Most stalls have been set up by NGOs. Nombulelo Masala, who has a paper maché stall, said: “Most of the products are made by African Raaswater community. My husband and I decided to help them by giving them means of employment.”

Also on display are handmade pottery ranging from Rs 750 to Rs 40,000 and woolen clothes starting at Rs 400.
