Office goers in
Connaught
Place can hope to breathe easy by 2010. After spending years
on NDMC's drawing boards, the proposed multi-storey, fully automated
parking lots on Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Baba Kharak Singh Marg and
Sarojini Nagar are off the block and unless hit by fresh roadblocks,
they could be ready in three years. Top
infrastructure
companies have been given these projects on a BOT basis.
The KG Marg parking lot has been bagged by DS Constructions Ltd
(DSCL) and DLF executive director Rajiv Talwar said the other two
projects have gone to the real estate major.
While details of the DLF projects were not readily available, DSCL
said it is going to build a 11 to 12 storey parking lot building
on KG Marg for about Rs 150 crore that will have a capacity for
parking up to 1,600 cars. The company proposes to create a total
space of 36,000 sq metre in the building, of which 6,200 sq meters
will be used for developing commercial space for offices and showrooms.
For full automation of the parking lot - two storeys of which
will be underground, DSCL has tied up with a German company with
expertise in the field, Palis Technologies Gmbh.
DSCL MD M S Narula said: "This project is very important
owing to its strategic location. We will deploy the latest technology
from Germany for multi-storey automated parking, with optimum space
utilisation to ensure that the facility accommodates the maximum
number of cars.''
The NDMC has for years been talking of multi-storey parking lots
in places like KG Marg, Baba Kharak Singh Marg and Sarojini Nagar.
Apart from other issues, the big debate was on the percentage of
commercial development that would be allowed in these projects.
"Having a very large commercial area would mean that
the additional parking capacity created in these buildings would
mainly meet their own requirement. On the other hand, not having
an adequate commercial area would either mean the projects are financially
unviable or extremely steep parking charges,'' said
a source.
The Baba Kharak Singh Marg parking lot will come up on the site
of Coffee House opposite Hanuman Temple. "People living
in central
Delhi will
find it convenient to park their car here and then head to the airport
if they don't want to avoid the traffic chaos to IGI,'' said an
official.
