Deadlock at AIIMS - strike called off after pressure from Delhi High Court
August 30, 2007

AIIMS: All India Institute of Medical Sciences
New Delhi: Under pressure from the Delhi High Court and the Union Health Minister warning of possible suspension, the doctors at AIIMS have been called off their strike.

The decision to end the strike came soon after a crackdown by the Delhi High Court, which asked the Government to take urgent steps to end the strike by doctors immediately.

The court said it would intervene on Friday if the strike was not called off on Thursday.

Wednesday evening the doctors decided to continue their strike. Nearly 1100 doctors boycotted the OPD services Thursday morning after their demand for the Health Minister to immediately sign 50 certificates was not met.

Doctors say more than 700 degrees have not been signed by the Health Minister for over 2 years but the minister has placed the blame on the administration.

Earlier on Thursday, the Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said the doctors should return to work as soon as possible or be prepared for suspension, although he didn't set a timeframe for it.

He also said the authorities could look at hiring doctors on contract if the strike continued.
