New Delhi - February 03, 2009: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s objective to cover the whole of Delhi with a Metro network by the year 2021 is on schedule under the leadership of Dr E. Sreedharan. Making it possible are dozens of companies and hundreds of professionals who are working behind the scene, round the clock. These are the professionals without whose contribution the project would not have been possible. It is their commitment and professionalism which has made Metro’s mission of safety, reliability, punctuality, comfort and customer satisfaction, possible
Today, February 3, Vishwa Vidyalaya-Jahangir Puri stretch of 6.36 km is being added to the 10.84 km Line No. 2 of Vishwa Vidyalaya-Central Secretariat. The 6.36 km long extension to the existing Line 2 (Central Secretariat to Vishwavidyalaya) will be flagged off by chief minister Shiela Dikshit on 3rd February and will be opened for public use from February 4. This marks the beginning of Phase II of Delhi Metro construction in the city.
With this, north Delhi will come closer to the heart of the city as the ride between Model Town and CP will just take 22 minutes. It is estimated to ferry over 1.51 lakh commuters by 2011. The Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety has given the mandatory safety certificate to the line, which is being commissioned a good eight months ahead of the scheduled date.
"With Metro's operation on this stretch, life will become quite easy for people like us who waste a lot of time and resources in commuting. Travelling in buses is a nightmare, especially for ladies," says Sunita Goyal who travels daily from Model Town to her office in CP.
People of this area are more than happy as DMRC is opening this stretch ahead of its schedule.
Says K.P. Singh, "Being ahead of time only shows the dedication and focused approach of the officials who are behind the project. Kudos to all the people who have worked hard to make it possible."
The flag off is only going to be ceremonial and there is no function scheduled for it. "DMRC is already stretched for resources to complete Phase II lines in time. A function would have meant diversion of some resources for three or four days, which can't be done,'' says Anuj Dayal, DMRC, CPRO.
The extension will have five more stations and take the existing Line 2 to Azadpur. Adarsh Nagar metro station is expected to see the maximum commuter load with 37,684 entries/exits daily. The elevated stations of the sections sport a different design too. In the next phases, DMRC has plans to extend this line further from Jahangirpuri to Badli. This 3.42 km extension with two stations is presently scheduled for Phase 3.
