New Metro Stations to connect AIIMS, Safdarjung; keeps patients' needs in mind
Apr 25, 2010

New Delhi: It is flanked by India's two most prominent hospitals. And rightly so, the upcoming AIIMS metro station has been designed keeping requirements of hundreds of patients visiting these two hospitals every day.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi's two premier government hospitals, will be directly connected with the Delhi Metro's Central Secretariat - Gurgaon line.

The AIIMS metro station has been designed in such a way that it will not only give direct access to metro commuters to these two hospitals but also help other pedestrians conveniently cross the busy Aurbindo Marg to reach the two hospitals, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's (DMRC) senior officials said.

Constructed strategically right between the hospitals, patients can be easily and conveniently taken to any of the two hospitals from this metro station. DMRC officials said the station has been connected with the two stations by two enter and exit gates each.

Officials said there are three pedestrian subways between the two stations. While the old NDMC subway is being renovated, the entrances of the station are being connected with each other through the unpaid area so that people can also use them as subways.

While AIIMS get almost 12,000 patients in its out patient department every day, the number of patients visiting Safudjung Hospital's OPD is about 8,000 a day.

DMRC officials expect that more than 60,000 people would use the AIIMS metro station everyday by 2011, the highest for any station on this 27-kilometre Central Secretariat- Gurgaon section.

“There are three lifts at the entrances and one central lift so that people can conveniently come out of the station,“ a DMRC spokesperson said.

According to officials, more than 90% construction work is complete.
