Metro at Moolchand crossing will take a 60-metre leap, pier to pier

18th, May, 2007

The Moolchand crossing, where a flyover and an underpass already exist, is in for another change with the high capacity bus corridor (HCBS) and Metro' Line 6 coming up there in the near future.

The elevated Metro line will cut across Ring Road (parallel to the flyover) to reach the Moolchand station, near Vikram Hotel. To ensure that the construction of the line causes least amount of congestion at the crossing. DMRC has planned that the elevated tracks will cross Ring Road on special piers located at either end of Ring Road. The span between them is 60 m.

"We have planned to block the road only for a few hours at night to carry out construction work. No arm of the intersection will be closed - only space where the piers will come up are going to be cordoned off," said Anuj Dayal, chief public relations officer of DMRC.

The line will come up on one side of the road and will not eat into space meant for vehicles. The project is being integrated with the HCBS corridor and the piers supporting the tracks will be constructed on the footpath or bicycle lane of the project.

The longest span between piers in any Metro line - distance of 100 m - has been planned on this elevated metro line. This has been done near National Highway-2, where the track passes over an existing railway line. The new line runs on standard gauge.
