Delhi Meto argument gets more elevation
2nd, May, 2007
EVEN AS the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) tries to persuade Delhi
metro Rail Corporation to shift its alignment in Nehru Place so that
it's commercial plots do not get devalued, the Defence Colony Market
Association, alloted shops by DDA more than 30 years ago, are protesting
the elevated metro stretch.
President of the Flyover Complex Market Association, Rajiv Bannar,
said that the metro would emerge out of the ground right next to the
flyover on Lala Lajpat Rai Marg. The ramps required for the metro
to emerge out on the ground would lead to permanent obstruction for
the shops located at the beginning. the rest of the shops numbering
over 100 would also be barricaded for the duration of the construction,
Babbbar said. he said that the two entrances to the shop complex will
be blocked off and the car park that can accommodate up to 140 cars
will be closed forever, Babbar said.
"We had purchased these shops from the Delhi Development Authority
and will meet their senior officials on Thursday morning to complain
about the matter and ask them to take up with DMRC on our behalf,
Babbar said.
The residents of Defence Colony, Kailash Colony, Greater Kailash 4tc.
too have been protesting against the elevated metro track through
their area. Harvinder Singh, General Secretary of Lajpat Nagar III
Association, said, "we are getting displaced once again after
partition by our own government. We have nowhere to go now,"
Singh said.
The DMRC however says that going underground would cost Rs. 800 crore
more and they would not be able to meet the 2010 Commonwealth Games
target. As for the market, DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said, "Only
about 15-20 shops in the flyover market would be affected during the
construction phase. None of the shops would be closed and we are not
acquiring any shop." |
