Eco-friendly Metro push for cycling

September 22, 2007

New Delhi: With the government working on a bicycle master plan to popularise cycling on short trips, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is also keen on doing its bit. Going the international way, the corporation is making state-of-the-art cycle stands at all metro station parking lots to encourage people to dump their cars and pedal their way to metro stations before they hop onto the trains.

A recent survey carried out by DMRC revealed that a large number of metro-riders were already using cycles to reach metro stations. At the Seelampur station, for instance, about 600 cycles are parked each day. The other such stations include Uttam Nagar, Shahdara, Dwarka Mor, Rithala and Tis Hazari. But most of these commuters hail from the lower socio-economic strata.

In a bid to encourage commuters from middle and upper middle class to also get to the metro stations on cycles instead of their cars, DMRC took the decision to make steel cycle stands at all stations in the parking lots.

"All the 42 parking sites of Delhi Metro have facilities for cycle parking. Iron stands for cycles will be put up at seven metro stations to start with, including Shahdara, Seelampur, Janakpuri (West), Dwarka Mor, Tis Hazari, Rithala and Uttam Nagar (East) in the next two months," said Anuj Dayal, DMRC's chief spokesperson. Parking will be free for all smart card holders, while others will have to pay Re 1 upto 10 hrs. Bicycle owners can also take a monthly pass for Rs 20.

DMRC is negotiating with the parking contractors for installation of the stands. And if need be, the corporation will get these stands fitted on its own.

  • Uttam Nagar East: 150-200 cycles
