DMRC to have touch-screen kiosks at stations
August 29, 2007
In the run-up to Commonwealth
Games 2010, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is setting up
touch-screen information kiosks at metro stations to provide commuters
information about Delhi Metro and its connectivity with other modes
of transport like DTC and feeder buses. The corporation is also looking
at incorporating maps of tourist destinations like monuments located
along metro routes.
Work has already started on developing the software. The first two
machines are going to come up at the Central Secretariat and Delhi
University metro stations on a trial basis. "Based on the response
to the kiosks, more consoles will be set up at other metro stations.
The aim is to cover the entire network by Commonwealth games," said
Anuj Dayal, Delhi Metro chief spokesperson.
The kiosks will provide information about Delhi - with maps, the culture
and history of the city, Delhi Metro routes and train timings, information
about smart cards. It will also have fare charts so that commuters
from outside the city are not fleeced.
To make the software more tourist friendly, DMRC is tieing up with
Delhi Tourism to make a list of all tourist spots close to the metro
network. These will be plotted on a map available on the kiosk. Such
a list has already been created for underground Line 2, which tourists
can use, to visit Rashtrapati Bhawan, India
Gate, National Museum, Cottage Emporium, Red
Fort, Paranthe Wali Gali, to list a few.
The touchscreen kiosks are going to be installed and maintained by
a private company, which has also reportedly put up similar kiosks
in collaboration with Delhi
Tourism at Dilli
Haat and also at several five star hotels. The company will bear
all the costs and will even pay DMRC for electricity. The corporation
is looking at attaching a printer facility to the kiosks so that commuters
can take printouts of route maps and tourist information. The software
will be upgraded at regular intervals.
