Connaught Place: Bringing the Glory Back
Connaught Place Talk about Delhi
and one place that never fails to make an impression is the Connaught
Place. Connaught Place and its surroundings occupy a place of
pride amongst the heritage
structures of Delhi. It was developed as a showpiece of Lutyens
Delhi featuring a Central Business District. Named after the
Duke of Connaught, the construction work was started in 1929 and
completed in 1933. The Connaught Place of today is one of the most
vibrant business districts
of Delhi. But with the development have also come certain problems,
like dispute over property rights, encroachments, haphazard development,
unauthorized construction, traffic congestion and others.
Today Connaught Place may have lost its old glory but the charm
of the market still works on the people. As a part of its 'Return
to heritage Project', NDMC has prepared a plan to revamp and redevelop
this proud landmark of Delhi. The plan includes provision of heritage
sensitive signages, engineering improvements of roads, drainage
sewerage, water supply and sub-stations etc, development of a traffic
management plan, provisions of street furniture's including adequate
parking, walkways etc and enhancing the structural stability of
all buildings including retrofitting for earthquake resistance.
All these components have been identified based on studies conducted
by various reputed agencies like SPA, RITES, CMCCC, NTPAC etc.
Stadium Improvement-Commonwealth 2010
Keeping in mind the upcoming commonwealth
games 2010, NDMC is undertaking a project of upgrading the Shivaji
and Talkatora Stadiums. The Shivaji stadium is proposed to be used
as a practice turf for hockey. The stadium is being redesigned as
a new spectator friendly facility. The project components include
development of a full fledged warm up area, modern and sustainable
players/spectators facilities. A basement level car parking facility
capable of generating 1200 car park spaces is also proposed. NDMC
is utilizing the services of a consultant for this project.
Talkatora Stadium
A similar upgradation/refurbishment is being undertaken for the
Talkatora stadium. The scope of work includes construction of a
state of the art, boxing ring, a projection screen for larger than
life experience of the game, powerful lighting, retractable seats
around the ring, creating new spaces, warm up areas etc. The project
also envisages evolving a traffic segregation system and independent
parking amongst each.
Gole market-Revitalising a historic Market
The history of Gole Market is inextricably linked to the rise of
Delhi as the capital of Birtish India when it was developed in 1918
as a subsidiary market to decongest Connaught Place. Originally
comprising of a number of buildings it had central 12-sided market
with six entrances. Over the years insensitive additions and alterations
have diluted the new classical composition of this colonial market.
NDMC is doing all in its might to restore this heritage building
to its pristine glory.
NDMC has undertaken a project of restoring and reinstating this
heritage building. The basic components of the project include structural
and architectural restortion, removal of incongruous additions,
service upgradation signage control and building illumination, provision
of heritage sensitive street furniture etc.
