India Gate may be archery arena
August 07, 2007 To showcase Delhi in
the international arena, government is finalising a proposal to
host the finals of the archery event during Commonwealth
Games 2010 at India
Gate in the heart of the city.
The organising committee, according to sources, had initially short-listed
two locations - Red
Fort and India Gate - and after inspecting both the venues,
it was felt that the latter was better suited to host the event.
The proposal was mooted after the Commonwealth
Games Federation urged the organising committee to choose some
iconic location, which showcases the city, for the archery finals.
Sources in the organising committee said that the venue would most
likely be the India Gate 'C' Hexagon opposite National Stadium.
"We have requested the Urban Development ministry to take up the
issue with the Central Vista Committee, which is the supreme authority
for granting permission to host any event in Lutyens' Zone,'' said
a senior sports ministry official.
The dilemma before the authorities is that according to rules and
guidelines for Lutyens' Zone, no permanent structure can be constructed
in a heritage area and any change requires clearance from the Prime
Minister's Office.
Sports ministry in coordination with the Urban Development ministry
is trying to resolve this issue keeping in view the prestigious
nature of the event. The event, in any case, may not need much construction.
Other archery events, excluding the finals, will be held at the
Yamuna Sports Complex.
Meanwhile, Sports ministry officials are facing a hitch with regard
to bowling at Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium. The Delhi
Police has raised objections to the event being held there and another
suitable venue is being sought. The ministry, in consultation with
experts, has also recommended a change in tracks for the cycling
events. "We want timber tracks for cycling in place of cement tracks
which had been earlier planned,'' said an official.
