March 14th, 2007
OVER a FORTNIGHT AFTER
Finacnce Minister P. Chidambaram announced a Rs.550-crore package
for the Commonwealth Games, the country is all set to get a Rs.1,700-crore
bonanza for the even from the government. A special office for the
Games would also be created.
On Thursday, the Union Cabinet would also consider a proposal of
the Youth and Sport Affairs Ministry for hunting sports talent at
the village-level and grooming them with the help of experts from
the Sports Authority of India (SAI). These sportspersons would be
ready to compete in the Delhi Commonwealth Games, an official said.
The ministry has sought Rs.1,000 crore for the SAI to improve infrastructure
in 10 sporting venues in Delhi, including the Yamuna Sports Complex,
the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium, the Karni Singh Shooting Range, the
Indira Gandhi Stadium and the national Stadium.
The ministry believes that huge flow of funds will turn Delhi into
a global sports city and boost India's chances for hosting
the Asian Games in 2014. The Indian Olympic Association has already
proposed to bid for the Asian Games.
The authorities will also earmark some funds for training of sportspersons
all over the country including ones spotted at the Panchayat-level
with the help of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj.
Youth Affairs and Panchayati Raj Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar told
the Lok Sabha on Wednesday that the government plans to start a
new system to provide facilities and attract talent at the panchayat-level
and a proposal in this regard would be taken up by the cabinet.
The government expects that Delhi would be fully ready to organize
the Games by the end of 2009 when projects to improve urban infrastructure
and sports facilities would be completed. A specialized office in
the Delhi Development Authority, to be headed by a commissioner-level
official, would be set up to look after the urban improvement projects
