Rs. 1,000 Crore Games budget for CPWD,
work to start from June 2008

THE PLAN to refurbish the city stadia for the 2010 commonwealth
games will take off by June 2008.
The central public works department (CPWD) will receive Rs. 1000
crore from Sport Authority of India to be spent on overhauling the
Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium, Indira Gandhi Indoor (IGI) stadium, Major
Dhyan Chand National Stadium, the swimming pool at Talkatora and
the Karni Singh shooting range.
CPWD officials said nearly half the amount will be spent o n the
JLN stadium, where the opening and closing ceremonies will be staged.
The stadium will have a new roof, state of the art lighting system,
acoustics and a barrier free environment. The stadium will be connected
with the metro rail. Four new greens will be developed in the complex
for lawn bowling. The weight lifting facility to be developed in
this complex will be modified later into an opera house, which will
be a first for the city. The approximate expenditure on the JLN
stadium will be Rs.470 crore.
The leaking trussed roof of the IGI stadium will also be replaced
under the new plan. The sprawling 102 acre complex will have a brand
new wrestling stadium as a new addition, while the Yamuna cycling
velodrome will be upgraded.
Space is also being developed for the archery qualifying events
at an approximate cost Rs.225 crores.
The Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium near the India
Gate will also undergo major changes. Apart from the heritage
facade of the building, the whole stadium will be done up anew.
The audience gallery will be brand new and a new office complex
(in harmony with the heritage portion) will be constructed at the
back.
A double basement parking will also be added to the National Stadium.
The IGI, JLN and MDC stadiums will have new hostel accommodations
for the visiting media. The approximate cost of renovating the National
Stadium will be Rs.120 crore.
The Talkatora swimming pool, left as an open-air swimming pool
in the race against time during 1982 Asiad, will finally get a roof
and be an air conditioned structure will all new facilities. It
will have an approximate cost of Rs.150 crore.
The Karni Singh shooting range at Tughlaqabad will have completely
new facilities for the competition games while the existing ranges
will be used for training facility.
